Placing solar on abandoned oil/gas sites in the Municipal District of Taber has been a topic for the past several years. As those talks continue, the M.D. is still exploring the feasibility of these projects and those taking charge are investigating if it’s worth time and commitment.

Council previously welcomed in Rocky Gao from Goldenhill Capital Group, who is also doing due diligence on moving forward with small-scale solar on these sites. After that delegation, a motion was made to direct administration to draft a proposed resolution for the Foothills Little Bow Municipal Association meeting concerning interconnection regulation challenges for small-scale solar projects on reclaimed oil/gas wells and present it to council for approval before the specified resolution submission deadline.

“We did have a delegation with Keith Hirsche (RenuWell) and another fellow that is looking to expand the RenuWell concept into the M.D. and potentially develop more sites for economic development purposes, employment, and all the rest -and to address some of the oil and gas reclamation liabilities that are out there, so it’s kind of a win-win for everybody, but some of the things that came up against through regulation has really thwarted some of their efforts as far as building new sites,” explained Brian Peers, director of Municipal Lands and Leases.
