Support for an Vauxhall Ag Society project and event will be considered before final budget deliberations for 2025.

During their regular April 7 meeting, Vauxhall town council received a sponsorship request from the Vauxhall Agriculture Society Rodeo Grounds Committee.

According to the letter, the committee is currently working on building a new facility on the rodeo grounds, which would allow them to have a more versatile space for events and activities. While there is an existing facility on the grounds, it has become a hazard and a deterrent to those wishing to host an event on site.

After reviewing building options and quotes, they have chosen to go with Denco West Builders, based out of Brooks/Duchess, to construct a 40 by 60 ft fully insulated and finished building featuring an upstairs loft, storage space, concession/kitchen, office, and a gathering space for events.

“Our building will be an invaluable asset not only for rodeo events but also as a versatile space available for a variety of community gatherings,” reads the letter. “By designing a multi-use facility, we hope to offer an inclusive venue that brings the Vauxhall community together throughout the facilities open months.”

However, they need help funding the project. While with the help of donors the committee has been able to raise almost $100,000, and they will continue to apply for grants to help fund the project, the estimate cost is $250,000. To fund the project, they are asking for support.

Russel Noris asked if there was a policy in place for this, noting they used to receive similar letters all the time. CAO Cris Burns said in an old policy, these asks would be presented during budget deliberations. As the town is getting close to finalizing their upcoming capital and operational budgets for 2025, they could discuss it during the next meeting.

Coun. Henry Zacharias noted that the society does a really good job, and their events draw a large crowd, saying that “they need a building”. Coun. Shelley Deleeuw said that while they were “projected out” for this year, they could potentially contribute to it in a future year. Additionally, they should look into supporting the rodeo event, Vauxhall Cowboy Days, coming up in August. Mayor Kimberly Crawley agreed, noting to get it into next year’s budget, they’ll need a number fairly quickly.
