Crime stats go down, E-Bikes remain a concern

The following stats are from the Taber-Vauxhall RCMP’s July monthly report to Vauxhall town council. The report was provided as an item of information and correspondence during council’s regular Sept. 8 meeting.

• 11 calls for service were responded to in Vauxhall

• Three 9-1-1 hang-ups were reported in town

• The RCMP patrolled Vauxhall 28 times

• No violation tickets were reported in town

• There was a 28 per cent decrease in total criminal code offenses between January and July 2026 compared to the same period last year

• There was a 34 per cent decrease in persons crime in the same period

• There was a 23 per cent decrease in property crime in the same period, including nine fewer instances of motor vehicle thefts and a 14 per cent decrease, or three fewer instances, of theft under $5,000. There was, however, six more instances of break and enters in the same period.

• There was a 38 per cent decrease in other criminal code offenses

Coun. Shelley Deleeuw expressed frustration with the town’s e-bike situation. Mayor Kimberly Cawley said she has heard from other communities about it, noting some had banned them. When council asked if bylaw could do something about it, they were informed they could not. Coun. Paul Ballard raised the possibility of getting the local RCMP into their schools to speak to youth about safe e-bike use.
