The new Montana/Alberta American Legion ‘A’ season is underway, and the Vauxhall Spurs have started their latest campaign towards their ultimate goal of bringing home a State banner.

The Spurs saw five games this weekend in the Ron Matthews Memorial Tournament to kick things off. First up was a Saturday game against the Fort Macleod Royals. Game one was all Spurs as they out-hit the Royals 10-3 and won 13-2. Parker McLaughlin had three hits, including a home run and a double. Langdyn Cummins and Roan Bosch each had two hits, Ryley Jensen hit a home run, and Roman Pavka and Sidney Pedersen each had a single. Tanner Bullock took the ball to start the season and gave the Spurs four innings with six strikeouts. He would see two runs score (one earned) on three hits and one walk. Pedersen finished the game off with a clean inning with one strikeout.

Saturday saw another game, this time the Spurs took on CBA Archers Red. Once again, the Spurs played well as they won 11-1. Randon Lauwen pitched a strong four innings with 11 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Bosch came out of the bullpen first and pitched 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. One earned run would score on two walks and two hits. Ty Dorin finished the game off as he collected the final out. Pavka had two hits, including a home run; Bosch and Pedersen each had two hits, Micah Fontaine hit a home run, and McLaughlin, Bullock, and Dorin each contributed with a hit.

Sunday was a one-game day for the Spurs as they lined up against the Lethbridge Miners. Lethbridge would jump out to a 9-0 lead after the first, and Vauxhall was never able to fully recover as they fell 12-7. Cummins had a pair of hits, including a double, while McLaughlin, Pavka, Jensen, Bullock, and Lauwen all had one hit in the loss. Cayden Fehr took the ball as the starting pitcher and was only able to collect one out. Nine unearned runs scored on two hits and three walks. Pedersen took over and gave Vauxhall two and two-thirds innings on the mound with one strikeout. Two earned runs would score on two walks and five hits. Jensen was the last pitcher to throw for Vauxhall, and he went two innings where an unearned run scored, and the reliever had a pair of strikeouts.

The weekend finished with a pair of Monday games. The first game of the day was against the Calgary Cubs. In a back-and-forth battle, both teams would have leads throughout the game. Thanks to a big four-run sixth inning, the Spurs would clinch a 9-6 win. Pavka had a big three-hit day, McLaughlin notched a pair of hits, Bullock had a triple, and Cummins, Jensen, and Lauwen all had a hit. Fontaine started on the mound and gave the Spurs three innings. Two earned runs would score on seven hits and two walks, and the starter struck out one batter. Dorin took the ball as the first reliever and pitched two innings with two strikeouts. Three earned runs would come home on two hits and three walks. The final pitcher of the game was Mark Vulcan, who gave the Spurs two innings with a single strikeout. Two hits and two walks led to one earned run.

The final game of the weekend saw a rematch between Vauxhall and Lethbridge for the championship. In another high-scoring game, both teams would score plenty of runs, but it was Vauxhall who was able to secure a 12-8 win. McLaughlin had three hits, including a double; Cummins and Pedersen each had two hits, and Pavka, Jensen, Lauwen, Bullock, and Bosch all had singles. Bosch started the game and went five innings with a pair of strikeouts. Six runs scored (four earned) on four hits and three walks. Jensen finished things off with two innings where two runs scored (one earned), one two hits.

Next action for the Spurs comes this weekend when they have a doubleheader on Sunday against the Royals. First pitch at Westward Stadium goes at 1 p.m.
