MD of Taber and Town of Taber participated in 2026 China Pea Conference

MD of Taber Councillors John Turcato and David Torrie recently joined a southern Alberta contingent in Yantai, Shandong Province, China, to participate in the 2026 China Pea Conference.

The delegation included representatives from the Municipal District of Taber, the Town of Taber (Councillor Joanne Sorensen and CAO Derrin Thibault), Southgrow Regional Initiative, Vulcan County, and the YourAlberta (Government of Alberta)’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

The conference brought together producers, processors, traders, industry leaders, and organizations from major pea-producing regions around the world, including Canada, the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. Throughout the event, Canada—and particularly southern Alberta’s strength as a pea-producing and pulse-processing region—was highlighted as a key contributor to the global pulse industry.

As part of the conference, the southern Alberta delegation participated in the Alberta Pulse Processing Investment Roundtable, where they shared information about the region’s agricultural advantages, investment opportunities, and growing value-added processing sector. The session helped showcase southern Alberta’s leadership in pulse production and its importance within international markets.

Participation in events like the China Pea Conference helps strengthen international relationships, promote local agriculture, and create opportunities that support the long-term growth and success of southern Alberta’s agricultural sector.

The MD of Taber extends its appreciation to the Government of Alberta Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and in particular Yifan Ding, Senior Commercial Officer based in Beijing, for coordinating and facilitating the delegation’s participation in this important international event.
