For 15 years, the Town of Vauxhall has started Seniors’ Week the same way, with a hot breakfast, familiar faces and a room full of conversations.

The Annual Seniors’ Breakfast returns June 2 at the Vauxhall Community Hall, running from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The free event is open to all seniors in the community.

The tradition grew from a simple suggestion by a Town staff member who wanted to recognize older residents during Seniors’ Week. What began as a modest gathering has expanded steadily over the years, with Town employees stepping up to handle the cooking and serving. Three years ago, the local Family and Community Support Service (FCSS) program came on board, bringing with it more activities.

This year, the event includes something new – bingo.

“Bingo is a natural fit because it is easy to join and encourages conversation and laughter at the tables,” said Mindy Dunphy, assistant chief administrative officer for the Town of Vauxhall.

Door prizes have always been part of the morning, with attendees entering their names for draws throughout the event. The organizers are keeping the attendees on their toes by not revealing the door prizes.

On the menu: pancakes, eggs, fruit and ham. Behind the scenes, eight Town employees along with FCSS staff will work together to set up the venue, prepare and serve the meal and greet guests as they arrive. Organizers say the collaboration between the two groups reflects a broader commitment to seniors and to community connection.

“For Town staff, hosting a Seniors’ Week breakfast shows respect and gratitude towards older residents who helped build and support the community,” she said. “It shows that the town values personal connections, not just providing services.”

For seniors who may be on the fence, the message from organizers is straightforward – come out. She encourages attendants to visit with a friend, neighbour, and to let the community celebrate the seniors. The breakfast allows seniors to connect, share stories and spend time together in a friendly atmosphere.
