Vauxhall Ag Society scholarship application now open

Applications are now open for the Vauxhall Agricultural Society’s scholarship program, with the deadline set for June 30. The $500  scholarship is open to Vauxhall High School graduates who are in their first year of an agricultural-related program at a college, university or technical school. 

Brandi Doerksen, secretary and social media manager of the AG Society, confirmed that the scholarship supports any field within agriculture.

“The scholarship supports a broad range of agricultural-related careers such as agribusiness, animal science, ag technology, mechanics, trades, crop science and veterinarian studies to name a few,” explained Doerksen. 

Historically, only one student receives the award annually varying on the number of applications submitted to the AG Society. Doerksen suspects that it might be due to lack of awareness about the scholarship. 

That is worth changing, first-year post-secondary education is expensive and overwhelming. Expenses add up fast, and $500 will make a huge difference in helping each student with their school expenses like textbooks, supplies, tools, rent, fuel, tuition and groceries.

Doerksen knows the transition firsthand, having shared her personal experience of moving from a small rural area to a big city, describing it as culture shock. She believes the scholarship funding can help take pressure off a student’s first few weeks away from home. 

“Growing up in a rural area, you definitely have a village behind you, and so it can be a little scary trying to create a new one,” said Doerksen. 

She believes that scholarships like this one extend beyond the money. Being recognized by your community, and having them say, “we see you and we are cheering for you.” It can mean a lot when you are leaving home and starting somewhere new. 

Applicants must submit their second semester transcript from their post-secondary institutions to be able to receive the funds, and not lose their eligibility for the scholarship. Successful applicants will be presented with an award of recognition during the Vauxhall High School Academic Awards Event.
