A funding decision from Vauxhall town council for the local chamber has been tabled for more information.

During their regular Oct. 20 meeting, Vauxhall town council reviewed a request for decision for the Vauxhall & District Chamber of Commerce funding.

Back in 2023, council had approved the sustainable funding initiative, and town administration has continued to provide sustainable funding in alignment with two motions, resolutions 23:22 and 23:23. However, because the later motion was intended only for the year 2023, administration is seeking clarity from council on what funding to provide the chamber moving forward.

For context, the motions were:

• 23:22: To approved sustainable funding of 50 per cent of all business license fees collected for the full year for five years of funding support for the Vauxhall & District Chamber of Commerce

• 23:23: To approve Vauxhall & District Chamber of Commerce funding of $1,400 for 2023.

Coun. Shelley Deleeuw said they had added the $1,400 on top of the business license funding so the chamber would receive about $5,000 in funding.

“We said $1,400 is kind of a base, and then they would get 50 per cent (from the business licenses),” said Deleeuw. “So, some years they would get less funding, but some years they’re getting more.”

Coun. Russell Norris noted that the new council would be allocating money to groups, and asked if this request was something like that, which CAO Cris Burns denied. Mayor Kimberly Cawley replied they had talked about being “consistent with funding for these groups so they could budget accordingly.”

Deleeuw requested that council table the discussion, noting that she would like to see exactly what the town had given them two years ago in terms of funding.
